The Platelet-Rich Plasma Wave

Platelet-Rich Plasma injection therapy is one of today’s most exciting advances in sports medicine! It’s an innovative non-surgical treatment injured athletes, weekend warriors, any active persons are turning to as a way to get faster healing and back in the game as quickly as possible.

Your own blood plays an active role in the Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP procedure. Cells contain healthy nutrients and growth factors, which stimulate healing in the injured tissue.

What Is This Pain Release Phenomenon (Platelet-Rich Plasma – PRP)

Platelet-Rich Plasma – PRP treatment can accelerate healing of injured tendons, cartilage, ligaments and muscles while relieving chronic joint pain. It uses a patient’s own blood to strengthen the body’s natural healing process. Choose New York physician Dr. Monfett specialty trained in administering platelet-rich plasma therapy.

Benefits of PRP Treatment

If you are injured or trying to manage chronic joint pain, PRP therapy may be an ideal treatment option for you. Here are just a few of the many benefits of PRP injections:

What Does Platelet-Rich Plasma PRP Treat?

Platelet-Rich Plasma PRP therapy is used to treat many sports injury conditions:

What to Expect From Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

When you come into our office for Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy, the first thing we will do is draw a small amount of blood. The platelets are then separated from the other blood cells and undergo a centrifugation process designed to increase the concentration of platelets. The platelets in human blood plasma secrete growth factors that repair injured tissues. Centrifuged blood has up to 10x the normal concentration of platelets. The platelets are then combined back with the rest of the blood cells. This process takes approximately 30 minutes.

Once the blood is prepared, Dr. Monfett will carefully inject it into the inured area. Fluoroscopy or ultrasound may be used to guide the injection. Depending on the treated body part, you may experience slight discomfort during the injection.

PRP Injection Recovery/Side Effects

During the first week following PRP treatment, it is not uncommon for symptoms to temporarily increase a bit, so you may be instructed to modify activities in order to give the body time to heal. Dr. Monfett may also suggest the use of a brace, boot or crutches.

Within three to four weeks, you will start to experience relief from pain and should continue to see improvement over the next four to six months. Physical therapy is typically recommended as a way to restore flexibility, strength and function that were lost during the injury.

PRP therapy is safe, but anytime there is an injection there is a very small risk of injection, bleeding or nerve damage. Contact our office today to take advantage of this groundbreaking treatment that has been used by many high-profile athletes.

Benefits of PRP Injections

Patients who opted for the PRP procedure indicated significant improvement in symptoms, eliminating the need for surgery. PRP has been reported to accelerate tissue healing up to 50%.
